Abstract Objective The self-learning ability based on practice is one of the core competencies of medical talents advocated by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. Emergency residents have a high risk of clinical work, and we are not clear about their current situation of self-learning. This study is to investigate the situation of self-learning ability of emergency residents in Peking Union Medical College Hospital through autonomous questionnaire survey. Methods The total number of emergency residents who accepted the survey is 55. The questionnaire survey is mainly related to the general information of the residents, the reasons for self-learning, their learning approaches, learning time, learning methods, common database and satisfaction scores of different database etc. Through statistical we tried to find the questionnaire itself for the reliability and validity of the test, in order to provide a reliable questionnaire tool for further investigation. Results In the emergency resident self-learning ways, electronic database become their first choice, the number of people who use very frequently 47 (85.46%); the number of residents who has weekly learning time more than 5 hours is 35 (63.63%); one of the most common reason for their self-learning is the clinical problems encountered (52 residents, 94.54%); self-learning places are mainly at dormitory / home (48 persons, 87.27%), followed by the doctor′s office (41 persons, 74.54%); the most often used electronic resource database is UpToDate clinical consultant (46 persons, 83.64%). Through statistical analysis, this study adopted the questionnaire Cronbach′s alpha coefficient is 0.863, Spearman-Brown coefficient was 0.935. The results showed good reliability and confirmatory factor analysis using maximum likelihood method to estimate the scale of actual measurement data fitting degree.χ2/df=1.807<5, construct validity was good. Conclusion The results of this investigation show that relatively little time self-learning for emergency residency, learning approach is most commonly used database through electronic equipment, and the UpToDate clinical consultant is the most common used electronic database.
